Located in the centre of Nyons, on the main square, the Institut du Monde de l’Olivier – AFIDOL is the office of the AFIDOL Rhône-Alpes, the French olive interprofession, and its communication department. One of the main jobs of this structure is the promotion and the development of the olive tree and its products (olive, olive oil, olive paste…) locally and nationally. Different organizations dedicated to the olive tree are also located in this place such as Syndicat de l’Olive noire de Nyons & des Baronnies (Nyons & Baronnies olive union), Confrérie des Chevaliers de l’Olivier (Brotherhood of the Knights of the Olive tree) and Fédération des Villes Françaises Oléicoles (French olive towns federation).
… A permanent exhibition
On the first floor, a unique exhibition « The olive tree, jewel of the Earth, the olive, pearl of our terroirs » dedicated to children and adults to know more about the olive tree and the main olive varieties. This exhibition is free and open from Monday to Friday from 9 to 12am and from 1.30 to 5pm, except on public holidays. Guided tour for groups are possible (entrance fee on demand).
… the tree of savors
The visitors can continue their tour with a tasty and play moment around the tree of savors. A tasting of 5 French PDO olive oils is proposed to each visitor to discover the aromatic diversity and richness of these oils and to learn more about the different cooking uses, from starter to dessert. Free tasting for children under 18, 1€ per adult.
… a place to get information
Different documents such as address books with the main French olive producers, recipe leaflets in which you can get advices to use olive and olive oil in your cooking, and leaflet about the specificities of olive oil and olives from the South of France are free at the reception. Books about the olive tree, its products, its benefits on health are also available for sale.
